As an exercise nut and cycling addict, getting the right fuel at the right time and in the right quantity is always a challenge, especially for endurance events. Cycling 150 – 200Km on a Sunday then fronting for work on Monday morning at 100% is essential when everyone is looking to you to lead by example. That’s where Emma comes in. She provides the advice to fuel, energise and sustain a very demanding lifestyle. Emma’s advice and guidance were particularly valuable for last year’s gruelling schedule where extensive overseas business travel combined with intensive training right through winter challenged the body and the immune system to the full. With her help, I not only emerged without a single day off sick but also managed to successfully complete several tough endurance events including the 235km Gold Coast Peaks Challenge, the 6-day Steve Waugh charity ride from Mittagong to Mt Kosciuszko and the inaugural 165km L’Etape. Emma’s biggest challenge was the fact that I was 62 years of age. With her help the old engine could make the distance without breaking down.

Reaching out to Emma was a blessing. Being time poor I needed to obtain the most out of my cycling as time permitted. Being a father of 3 with a full time job and lots of travelling , nutrition was not on the priority list nor did I really understand it. Cycling 200 - 300km per week, I wasn’t seeing the improvements I would have liked however through Emma, she lay the foundations on nutrition explaining the links between nutrition, when to consume and quantities. I found that following Emma’s simple to understand structured advice, I was able to improve my performance on the bike without disrupting the family eating plan. As I have been active all my life, I have generally stayed with a balanced diet while enjoying my food a lot. Having recently turned 50 & still enjoying the challenge of participating in endurance events, I have increased my cycling to include 200km+ rides. We all know that you can’t progress without training & preparation. For me, this not only applies to the hours & km’s spent on the bike but also identifying the best nutrition that is going fuel your body. Emma has provided thorough guidance & support in assessing the most suitable foods that can assist in training, events & recovery. I came to realise that the longer sessions on the bike required specific attention to my individual needs. The easy access to gels, sports bars & electrolytes actually started to work against me.
Using the experience from previous long events & training sessions, Emma identified the over use of sugar was creating gut issues for me. While this was manageable, if it wasn’t addressed the problems would only get worse & restrict my ability to enjoy my cycling. Emma’s direction towards consuming the right selection of foods for training, recovery & events provided added support & strength to my challenges. Through added consultation, Emma provided additional guidance to my specific needs.
In the last 9 months I have now completed 2 x 235km Peaks Challenges, 170km LEtape Snowy Mtns Ride plus two (350km + 700km) multi-day charity rides.

Having an active lifestyle, family and a busy work schedule, combined with over the past 10 years competing Ultra marathons, I thought I knew about nutrition.
